Berlin, November 23 2016. The first candidates for the next round of the Big-Hearted Rail Employee competition have been named. Out of around 90 nominations sent to the Pro-Rail Alliance by rail customers well before the deadline on January 31, the train operators have already identified 18 staff members by name and received a photo. All the nominees helped rail customers who had got into difficulties.

Favourites: AVG train driver found missing child

Among the favourites in the online gallery is a train driver working for AVG who looked after a lost four-year old boy who was already being searched for by police helicopter; a train attendant on a BOB train in Bavaria who took care of a passenger who had been injured by other passengers’ trolley cases; and a Metronom train driver who doubled up as an emergency courier for a commuter who urgently needed his health insurance documents. The Deutsche Bahn Intercity train manager Alexander Rezek from ICE Cologne is the “most entertaining train attendant” and has become this year’s customer favourite: no other rail employee has received so many enthusiastic nominations this year as Rezek, with a total of nine passengers wanting to see him on the winners’ podium.

Half the candidates work for Deutsche Bahn

At its launch, around half of the candidates in the online gallery work for the national operator Deutsche Bahn. But employees from the private train operators were also on top form: Transdev, which runs NordWestBahn and the Bavarian Oberlandbahn (BOB), Metronom, AVG, ODEG, Eurobahn and Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn (NEB) also have excellent personnel that rail customers have suggested for the title of Big-Hearted Rail Employee.

All the rail employees nominated by rail customers have given their consent for the stories to be used in the competition and for their photos to appear in an ever-expanding online gallery. From this shortlisted group of title candidates, a jury made up of representatives from rail unions, passenger groups and transport associations will choose the winners on April 26, 2016.

Big-Hearted Rail Employee 2017 – nominations close on January 31

Frequent travellers, commuters and holiday makers have until January 31, 2017 to send in their stories and nominate their big-hearted rail employee. Newly identified candidates will continue to be added to the gallery until March.
