National statistics: rail freight transport has overcome the crisis
Berlin. The latest figures from the German Federal Office of Statistics (Destatis) show that the rail freight transport sector has overcome the economic crisis. In 2010, the sector once again reached a market share 17.2 percent. "This means that rail freight grew faster than road transport," said Dirk Flege, managing director of the Pro-Rail Alliance. "The sector has almost fully recovered from the downturn in 2009, which saw the railways' market share drop to 16.5 percent."
In view of rising oil prices, the Pro-Rail Alliance expects that rail freight transport will boom in the coming years due to the fact that most freight trains are today already electrically powered. "The economic crisis only caused a temporary hiatus in the long-term positive trend for rail freight transport. The success story will now continue in the coming years."

The Pro-Rail Alliance managing director warned politicians against simply waiting for increasing fuel prices to force the issue of modal shift. "The second important success factor is investing in the rail network," said Flege. German train operating companies (TOCs) are not satisfied with developments. According to a poll carried out by the Federal Network Agency in December 2010, 37 percent of TOCs said the general state of the network was "poor or insufficient". Flege: "That is a bad report card for the federal government's transport policy." A total of half of all TOCs described the general state as "moderate". "That is a strong indication that more money needs to go into the network," said Flege. Pro-Rail Alliance calculations show that five billion euros are required annually. The federal government has only budgeted 3.9 billion euros for 2011..
