Travelling by rail is relaxing, environmentally friendly, safe, and as a rule, costs less than maintaining a car. Never before have so many people in Germany used the trains. In 2009, the number of railway travellers was 2.3 billion, which is around 50 percent more than in the mid 1990s. A little known fact is that rail travel is growing faster than car travel, which is actually shrinking. This trend in favour of the railways will be boosted by rising oil prices. In other words: passenger rail transport is booming.
