Environment
The railways are the most eco-friendly mode of transport. Only by shifting more transport onto trains can the transport sector become more environmentally sustainable. Regardless of the benchmark – use of energy or land, CO2 and noxious emissions – the environmental record of the railways is considerably better than cars, trucks or aircraft. The Pro-Rail Alliance has a comprehensive database – ‘Environment and Transport’ – and regularly publishes an environmental comparison of transport modes. But the rail alliance does not just simply publicise the environmental advantages of the railways, it also works actively to ensure that the rail sector continues to extend them.
