The rail freight transport sector is growing, and since 2002 it has regained market share from the roads. The world-wide economic crisis has only slowed this development temporarily since long-term global trends – energy prices, climate change, and sustainability – all speak out clearly in favour of rail transport. Internationally, rail freight transport is also going through a renaissance. In the USA, Russia, Australia and China the railways are the most important mode of transport in the cargo sector. The Pro-Rail Alliance is convinced that a 25 percent market share for rail freight transport in Germany is a realistic goal by 2020.
